VFX Artist (Realism / Medieval Strategy)

We are looking for an experienced VFX Artist to support production of a realistic / hyper-realistic medieval strategy title in development at Stepico Games.
You will work closely with Art Direction, Tech Art, Design, and Engineering to build high-quality, performance-friendly real-time effects that sell weight, impact, materials, and atmosphere.

Project VFX Focus (what you’ll do)

We need a VFX artist who can deliver convincing, grounded effects for medieval gameplay, including:

  • Combat VFX (sword / parry / block / on-character FX)
  • Ranged VFX (arrows)
  • Ground & Material Reactions
  • Fire / smoke / destruction
  • World atmosphere (optional but valuable)

Target reference (feel & readability): Mount & Blade-like gameplay with heavier realism and strong material response.

Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of UE5 Material Editor:
  • Experience with Material Instances and parameterization for runtime control
  • Understanding of translucency pitfalls: sorting, overdraw, refraction cost, scene depth usage
  • Proven pipeline for creating flipbooks (smoke/fire/dust) and preparing them for UE
  • Familiarity with simulation sources and baking to real-time
  • Understanding of timing principles
  • Experience working with profiling tools and practical optimization

Nice to Have (Strong Plus)

  • Destruction workflow knowledge:Houdini fracture concepts, debris staging, secondary dust layers
  • Familiarity with UE5 rendering features relevant to VFX:

Lumen considerations for emissive VFX \ Nanite awareness (what works/doesn’t for VFX geo)

  • Experience building impact decals / footprint systems / wetness accumulation (material-driven)
  • Experience collaborating with Tech Art on shared libraries (modules, templates, parameter standards)
